Growing Older, Getting Sick, and Learning Not to Be Afraid

There’s a saying I’ve been thinking about more and more:

“Once an adult, twice a child.”

When I was younger, I didn’t fully understand what that meant. Now, as I get older, I feel it in my bones — and in my thoughts.

Growing older changes the way you look at life.
It also changes the way you look at your body.

When Growing Older Starts to Feel Scary

When you’re young, your body feels like something you can trust without thinking about it. You don’t worry much about tests, appointments, or diagnoses. You just live.

But as you get older, you become more aware.

You notice changes.
You feel aches.
You hear stories.
You start paying attention in ways you didn’t before.

And sometimes, that awareness turns into fear.

The Fear of Getting Sick

One of the hardest parts of aging is realizing that health is not guaranteed.

Not because something is wrong, but because time makes us honest.

Medical tests bring that fear to the surface. Especially when you’ve already had a scare before.

I know that fear personally.

The last mammogram I had led to a biopsy. Even though time passed and life continued, the memory stayed. So now, needing another mammogram doesn’t feel routine, it feels heavy.

And it’s okay to admit that.

Fear Doesn’t Mean Lack of Faith

I want to say something gently, because it matters:

Being nervous does not mean you lack faith.

Faith doesn’t erase fear, it walks with it.

Even strong, faithful people feel anxious before medical tests. Even people who trust God still worry about their bodies. That’s not weakness. That’s being human.

Choosing Care Over Avoidance

Going to the doctor, getting checked, and following through—these are not acts of fear.

They are acts of care.

Choosing to know is often braver than choosing to avoid.

Getting a mammogram is not inviting bad news.
It’s choosing responsibility.
It’s choosing yourself.

Once an Adult, Twice a Child

That saying doesn’t mean we become helpless.

It means we learn something important again:

  • We need care
  • We need gentleness
  • We need reassurance
  • We need support

Just like children do.

And there is no shame in that.

God Is Present in This Season Too

God is not only with us when we are strong.
He is also with us when we are afraid, aging, uncertain, and tired.

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”
— Isaiah 41:10

That promise doesn’t expire with age.

A Gentle Reminder to Myself (and You)

If you’re worried about getting older…
If medical appointments make you anxious…
If your body feels more fragile than it used to…

You are not alone.

Caring for your health is not living in fear.
It is living with wisdom.

And growing older does not mean losing your worth.
It often means learning how precious life really is.

A Short Prayer

Heavenly Father,
You know my fears about my body and my future.
Give me peace where anxiety tries to take hold.
Help me trust You with what I cannot control
and take care of what I can.
Thank You for walking with me through every season of my life.
Amen.
